Worthy of Hire
Growing up, my parents always had me and my siblings working around the house. We had our normal household chores, but also outside work. Some of my Dad’s favorite hobbies were gardening and landscaping. He had what many call a “green thumb”, which means he could get anything to grow. What’s my point? Who do you think did much of the hard labor of the gardening and landscaping? Right...me and my siblings. He taught us how to work with our hands and to develop a work ethic that helped me tremendously as a teenager in the workplace.
The Bible clearly tells us that those who work should receive compensation, or wages, for that work. However, we must also balance the expectation of wages with a generous spirit toward others in need. I got my first paying job as a paperboy when I was 13 years old. Though I had a decent work ethic then, my Dad told me a couple years ago that my work ethic really picked up when I discovered I could make money for working. I still remember the item I saved up to buy with the money I made off my new job. What a rewarding feeling I had knowing I had worked and saved to purchase this item. Some of you have experienced this feeling already as you have a paying job while others are still too young. Start now to build your work ethic so employers see you are worth hiring. So, whether you have a job now or not, develop an attitude of hard work and watch as the Lord blesses.
